Prior to commencing practice at the Bar, Hilbert was tipstaff to the Hon. Justice Peter Garling RFD in the Supreme Court of NSW

Before that, he worked for over three years as a solicitor at Freehills. His experience as a solicitor included:

Acting for directors of a global investment and advisory firm in liquidation

Acting for the head contractor in a dispute over the refurbishment of a blast furnace in South Australia

Acting for the head contractor in a dispute over the commissioning of an iron ore processing facility in South Australia

Advising a multinational mining corporation in a dispute with contractors
